Why is it important to teach pronunciation?

This short advertisement from Berlitz shows the importance of teaching pronunciation.

How familiar our students are with the sounds of English will influence how they perceive it.  Raising students' awareness about these sounds will help them to be able to distinguish phonemic differences, such as the difference between /s/ and /θ/.   Consequently, studying pronunciation will help students' listening comprehension.

Of course, it isn't likely that successful phonemic discrimination will mean the difference between life and death, as in the video clip, but it's one necessary piece in the puzzle of learning to communicate in a foreign language.
